7.10.11 57004 & 57010 3J11 Carlisle - Carlisle, Town End Farm

My first shot of the 2011 rail head treatment train season and perhaps my best effort ever of these workings. It was touch and go with the light but at the last minute the scene was illuminated with bright Autumnal evening sun as 57004 led 3J11 Carlisle - Carlisle near Town End Farm north of Keld. Even after operating for a short period of time it's surprising how filthy the rear loco looks already. As ever Keld is a great choice for early evening workings at this time of year and the brooding Pennines make for a superb background. This shot was used in The Railway Magazine Dec 2011 in a feature on S&C freight. This shot was also published in the 'Line by Line - Settle & Carlisle' book by Martin Buck.
