11.8.12 - 66183 & 66021 (rear) 6L43 Carlisle - Hellifield, Appleby

The 11th August is an important date in S&C history. On this date in 1968 the infamous 'Fifteen Guinea Special' ran south over the S&C billed as the last ever BR steam halued train. 44 years later it was business as usual at Appleby and for several weekends in succession we've seen engineers workings use the route in connection with improvement work near Hellifield. The third of four diagrams to head south today was the top and tailed 6L43 Carlisle - Hellifield, led by 66183 with 66021 dead on the rear. The formation was mainly JNAs loaded with ballast with some flatbeds with track sections and is seen passing through a warm and sunny Appleby at speed.
