JL - 9.5.16 66708 6M33 Arcow - Pendleton, Ribblehead

The legendary S&C winds will be a familiar subject to those who've read a sample of S&C books. There are many accounts in steam days of trains being reduced to walking pace by such winds on exposed sections of the route. One such section which is more exposed than most is at Ribblehead. Although temperatures in Cumbria today reached the mid-twenties there was a surprisingly strong wind blowing in from the south east. I've been out in worse of course in Winter but I've never seen a demonstration of the wind on a freight train payload. However, today as 66708 'Jayne' eased over Ribblehead viaduct with 6M33 Arcow - Pendleton the dust off the quarried stone was blown straight out of the wagons and into the valley below. Not quite as dramatic as the time Ford Anglia cars were blown off flats and over the edge of the viaduct but an unusual sight non the less.
