With the WCML shut for a 2 week period to replace the bridge over the M6 at Clifton Avanti are diverting some of their services via the S&C. As it has done for generations once again the Midland route is adding extra value by providing the ideal alternate route option. However, 2026's incarnation of WCML diverts is probably the worst on record. Alas, we no longer see Pendo drags and instead Avanti's new Evero bi-mode units are being used (mostly in multiple) as the preferred traction. Sunlight was hard to find today but I was keen to bag at least 1 shot to mark the 1st day of 2026 diverts for the record. Here 805005 and 805007 forge south through the freezing air and across the black waters of the Eden at Eden Lacy forming 1Z38 14:21 Carlisle - Wigan North Western. I wonder if the passengers lifted their heads to enjoy the spectacular afternoon views whilst crossing the roof of England?
